Sumo Wrestling Comes to Downtown Greensboro as First Saturday Stroll Expands to a Full Weekend Community Event
June 5–6 celebration on South Elm Street features the NC State Games Sumo Wrestling Competition, a cornhole tournament, live music and a vendor market
GREENSBORO, NC — Downtown Greensboro will trade its usual Saturday pace for the thud of sumo wrestlers this weekend, as June's First Saturday Stroll on Elm expands into a two-day celebration. The free community event, presented by Downtown Greensboro Inc. (DGI) and the City of Greensboro Parks & Recreation Department, runs Friday, June 5, and Saturday, June 6, with a lineup that ranges from a cornhole tournament and DJ dance party to live music, a vendor market and the headline attraction — the NC State Games Sumo Wrestling Competition.
For the first time this season, the monthly Stroll grows beyond a single afternoon, opening with Friday-evening festivities and building toward Saturday's live sumo wrestling championship.
"The First Saturday Stroll has become one of the best ways to experience everything downtown has to offer, and this month we're giving people even more reasons to come out," said Rob Overman, Interim Executive Director of Downtown Greensboro Inc. "Watching athletes compete right in the middle of South Elm Street is a one-of-a-kind moment that only happens downtown. We hope folks make a full weekend of it — shop our local businesses, grab dinner at a downtown restaurant and soak up the energy."
The weekend's main event takes place Saturday afternoon, when the 300 block of South Elm Street closes to vehicular traffic to host the NC State Games Sumo Wrestling Competition. Visitors will have the rare chance to watch elite regional athletes compete in the historic sport in the heart of downtown Greensboro.
The excitement kicks off Friday, June 5, with a live DJ dance party and the BODYARMOR State Games Cornhole Tournament — open to the public — from 5 to 8 p.m.
On Saturday, June 6, the street transforms into a bustling, pedestrian-only market from noon until evening. Visitors can browse a diverse collection of local vendors, national brands and community organizations, all set to live music. Featured Saturday participants include:
- Local makers & retailers: BrewPeddlers, Sustainably Yours, Scentsation'z, Belle Etoile Esthetics, and official Megan Moroney merchandise
- Major brands & home exhibits: Iconic denim brand Wrangler and Renewal by Andersen
- Community & culture: The Carolina Theatre, the Pink Ribbon awareness pop-up booth, Youth Focus Inc, and the central DGI Tent
Event Logistics & Accessibility (June 5–6)
