DGI Launches Emergency Stabilization Fund for Downtown Small Businesses
New program reimburses up to $2,000 per year for vandalism and property damage repairs
Greensboro, NC — Downtown Greensboro Inc. (DGI) today launched the Emergency Stabilization Fund, a new program that helps street-level retailers, restaurants and service businesses recover from unexpected property damage — from broken windows and graffiti to forced-entry repairs and other costs outside the owner's control.
"A broken window or act of vandalism can be the difference between a small business staying open or shutting its doors," said Rob Overman, Interim Executive Director of DGI. "This fund fills the gap when insurance and cash reserves fall short, so owners can focus on running their business instead of absorbing the hit."
Qualifying businesses can receive reimbursement of up to $2,000 once per calendar year, with award amounts based on repair estimates and supporting documentation submitted with the application.
Who's Eligible
The program is open to street-level small businesses with fewer than 50 employees located within the Downtown Greensboro Business Improvement District that have experienced documented property damage or vandalism.
What's Covered
Eligible expenses include:
- Repairing or replacing broken windows and doors
- Repairing flooring, ceilings or drywall damaged by forced entry
- Restoring storefront framing or exterior damage from impact
- Graffiti removal
- Emergency board-up services
- Locksmith services related to forced entry
What's Not Covered
The fund does not reimburse overhead costs such as rent or payroll, routine maintenance, or cosmetic improvements unrelated to documented damage.
