Robert Mitchum stars as Harry Powell, a sinister self-proclaimed preacher who marries a recently widowed woman after learning that her late husband may have hidden a large sum of money. When Powell’s true intentions become clear, her young children become the only thing standing between him and the secret fortune.

Charles Laughton’s haunting directorial debut is a visually striking blend of gothic fairy tale, film noir, and psychological thriller. Featuring Mitchum’s unforgettable performance and expressionistic cinematography, The Night of the Hunter was initially misunderstood but has since become recognized as one of the most distinctive and influential films of the 1950s.
