Details
One of the most revered comedies of the silent era, this film finds hapless Southern railroad engineer Johnny Gray (Buster Keaton) facing off against Union soldiers during the American Civil War. When Johnny’s fiancée, Annabelle Lee (Marion Mack), is accidentally carried away aboard a train stolen by Northern forces, he sets off in relentless pursuit—by foot, by handcar, and ultimately by locomotive. What follows is a breathtaking series of real, large-scale stunts and intricately choreographed comic set pieces that showcase Keaton’s boundless wit, physical precision, and fearless athleticism, securing the film’s place as one of the greatest achievements in comedy and early cinema.
