Community Invited to Attend Black Patriots Commemoration Events

GREENSBORO, NC. The community is invited to celebrate Flag Day and kick off Juneteenth Week by participating in the Black Patriots Commemoration Day, honoring the unsung heroes of the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, 1781.

The celebration is hosted by the Black Patriots Commemoration Project in collaboration with the International Civil Rights Center and Museum (ICRCM) on Sunday, June 14, 1:30 PM, at the ICRCM, 134 South Elm Street, Greensboro, NC 27401. The event includes a guided bus tour of the National Military Park lead by Dr. Scott Culclasure (historian), followed later by Dr. Sonny Kelly’s powerful one-man performance, “The Ongoing Fight for Freedom” at 4:30 PM. Guests will have the opportunity to engage in a discussion with Dr. Kelly and a descendant of Black Patriot Ishmael Titus following the performance. The event concludes with Food Trucks on February One Place.

Due to limited seating, advanced registration is required for each event and tickets may be purchased via the ICRCM website: https://www.sitinmovement.org/

Mr. Roymieco (Roy) Carter, Associate Professor and Director of the Visual Arts Program at NCATSU, has created a special commemorative Black Patriots artwork for the occasion. It is on display now in the lobby of the ICRCM. Archival-quality prints, individually numbered and signed by Mr. Carter, will be available for purchase in the ICRCM gift shop. Additional commemorative merchandise will also be available.

The Black Patriots Commemoration Project aims to increase awareness of African American contributions during the Revolutionary War at our nation’s founding and the underrepresented history of African Americans at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse on March 15, 1781, through public commemorative art. More information about the Black Patriots Commemoration Project and how the community can get involved can be found at https://blackpatriotsgso.org.
