The Center for Visual Artists is pleased to present a solo exhibition by emerging artist Brett Ingram, whose assemblage works transform found materials into richly layered narratives. Drawing from a background in writing, filmmaking, and podcasting, Brett brings a cinematic and literary sensibility to three-dimensional collage, creating pieces that feel like fragments of larger, unfolding stories.

Each work in the exhibition functions as a snapshot, often character-driven, inviting viewers into worlds shaped by dream logic, visual puns, and unexpected juxtapositions. Analog systems and mechanical components recur throughout the work, operating as metaphors for psychological and spiritual aspects of the human experience. These artistic constructions balance precision with play, revealing Brett's quirky sense of humor.

“I think of assemblage as storytelling in physical form,” says Brett. “Every piece follows its own internal rules, but together they create a consistent tone and atmosphere—almost like chapters from the same strange book.”

The artist’s process is deeply informed by formative training in engineering, with each work requiring extensive problem-solving from conception through execution. Materials are carefully chosen for both symbolic resonance and longevity. The exhibition features a range of warm toned woods, including oak, walnut, mahogany, pine, poplar, and cedar, alongside metals such as iron, steel, brass, copper, aluminum, and bronze. Glass elements, particularly magnifying and photographic lenses, play a prominent role, reinforcing themes of perception and focus. With the exception of acrylic resin, plastic is deliberately avoided in favor of materials the artist considers more permanent and authentic.

“My father was an engineer and builder, and both of my grandfathers were builders. Following in their footsteps, I have designed my work to be solid and durable, using nails, screws, and industrial strength adhesives to fasten each piece together.” Brett's works are heavy-duty and not easily broken. Besides, any potential dents, scratches, or blemishes that may result from moving or handling would only add character to the gritty textures of my desired aesthetic.

This first solo exhibition marks a significant moment in Brett Ingram's evolving practice, bridging narrative traditions with sculptural innovation and offering viewers an immersive, intellectually playful experience.
